Saturday, August 14, 2004Player/Pitcher/Fireman of the Year Awards |
|---|
| The Mike Schmidt Most Valuable Player Award for 2004 goes to the obvious choice, A.J. Van Slyke of the Bluff City Bombers. The outfielder from LaDue, Missouri, led the league in 7 offensive categories, many of which far surpassed the nearest competitor.
Van Slyke led the league in average at .402, 44 percentage points more than the second place player; led in slugging at .667, 167 percentage points higher that second place; led in on-base percentage at .514, 53 percentage points higher than #2; led in total bases with 116, a whopping 39 more than the #2 player; led in hits with 70, 11 more than #2; led in homers with 9, 4 more than #2; and led in runs with 51, 6 more than #2. He was 2nd in RBI with 40, 3 behind the leader; 2nd in doubles with 15, 2 behind the leader; and 2nd in stolen bases, 7 behind the leader. Van Slyke also was the only Bomber to play in every game of the season. The MVP Award finishes a fine season where A.J. also won 2 Player of the Week Awards and both the Player of the First Half and Player of the Second Half Awards. A.J. will be a junior this fall at Kansas. The Pitcher of the Year Award was not an easy choice as there was no pitchers who led in more than one of the major pitching statistics. There were many pitchers this year that had very good summer seasons. To narrow down the field we used the following criteria: 1) primarily a starting pitcher; minimum of 50 innings; minimum of 5 wins; maximum of 1 loss; ERA under 3.00; opposing batting average under .230 and minimum of 40 strikeouts. Based on that criteria, four pitchers had slightly better performances than the rest of the field and share the award for 2004. Alphabetically, these four pitchers are Nathan Culp of the Bluff City Bombers, Josh Johnson of the Danville Dans, Ned Schauff of the Twin City Stars and Eric Theisen of the Twin City Stars. Culp, who won the Pitcher of the Tournament Award, was the only pitcher to win 7 games, and he did it with 0 losses. He made 10 starts for the Bombers, including the Tournament Championship game, and 2 relief appearances. His ERA for the season was 2.79, highest of the award winners, but would have been 1.93 had he not started a game for the Bombers with only 1 day\'s rest after one of his relief appearances. Batters batted only .207 off of Culp for the season in his 61-1/3 innings of work. He struck out 48 batters and walked only 16. Culp, a left-hander, is from Edwardsville, Illinois, and will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Missouri. Josh Johnson of Danville earned a share of the award with a 5-1 record as a 10 game starter for the Dans, finishing with an ERA of 2.17. He led the league in strikeouts with 61 and led his 4 co-award winners in opponents batting average at a measly .197. The right-hander from Caledonia, Mississippi, walked only 17 batters against those 61 strikeouts in 54 innings. Johnson had earlier won 2 Pitcher of the Week awards and shared the Pitcher of the First Half award this season. Josh will be a sophomore this fall at Mississippi State. Left-handed Ned Schauff of the Twin City Stars earned his share of the award going 5-0 in 9 starts for the Stars with an ERA of 2.25. Batter hit only .219 off of Schauff, who also fanned 50 batters in 60 innings pitched, walking only 14. Schauff pitched 2 complete games this summer, one of those a shutout. Schauf, who won two Pitcher of the Week Awards this summer, is from Cassville, Wisconsin, and will be a senior this fall at Illinois State. And finally, Eric Theisen of the Twin City Stars earned a share of the award with a 6-1 final record and an ERA of only 1.99 in 63-1/3 innings. The right-hander made 9 starts for the Stars and 2 relief appearances. He pitched 3 complete games including a shutout. Batters hit .228 off Ned, who also struck out 43 while walking 20. Eric had previously earned only 1 Pitcher of the Week Award so was very consistent from start to finish to earn a share of the season award. Theisen is from Adrian, Michigan, and will be a sophomore this fall at Illinois State. For the first time, the CICL has a Fireman of the Year Award. The 2004 winner is Pat Evers of the Bluff City Bombers. In 26 relief appearances, Evers had 14 saves and a 3-4 W-L record. His two final saves were in both games of the Tournament final series against the Twin City Stars. The next closest pitcher had only 6 saves for the season. Evers, a right-hander, had a 2.92 ERA in 37 innings with 32 strikeouts; batters hit only .217 against his offerings. His Fireman award goes with his earlier honorable mention for Pitcher of the Second Half Award. Evers is from St. Louis, Missouri, and will be a senior this fall at Central Missouri State. Wednesday, August 11, 2004Tournament MVPs Named |
|---|
| The Most Valuable Player of the 2004 Tournament is Scott Peden of the Bluff City Bombers. Peden had game winning RBI in 2 of the Bombers 4 victories, including 2 in the Championship game in the Bombers\' 3-1 final game victory. For the tournament, Peden batted .417 (10-24), led all players with 10 hits, 3 doubles, 7 RBI and 13 total bases. Peden finished the overall season at 3rd in average at .347 (52-150), 2nd in slugging at .500, 3rd in hits with 52, led the league in RBI with 43 and led in doubles with 17. Scott is an infielder from San Antonio, Texas, and will be a senior this fall at St. Louis University.
The Most Valuable Pitcher of the 2004 Tournament is Nathan Culp of the Bluff City Bombers. Culp made 2 starts in the tournament and was the winning pitcher in the Championship Game. The Bombers also won his other start in Danville to stay alive in the tournament after dropping their opener to the Dans in the first round. Culp pitched 14 innings, allowed only 2 runs, 1 earned on 10 hits (9 singles and 1 double). His tournament ERA was 0.64. The win in the tournament final enabled the left-hander to finish the year with a perfect 7-0 record, 2.79 ERA in 61-1/3 innings pitched; opposing batters hit only .207. Nathan is from Edwardsville, Illinois, and will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Missouri. Wednesday, August 11, 2004Bluff City Wins 2004 CICL Tournament |
|---|
| Nathan Culp won the most important game of the post-season and improved to 7-0 on the year as Bluff City topped Twin City 3-1 to take their first ever CICL Crown. They had lost in their three previous attempts in a row.
Carlos Jackson led the eight hit attack with a 3-4 performance, including two runs and two stolen bases. Scott Peden had two hits and two huge RBI - one in the first and one in the third. A.J. Van Slyke scored on an error in the third on Peden's single - making Peden's bat responsible for all three Bomber runs. That was more than enough for the trio of Culp, Kyle Jones and Pat Evers, who together allowed a run on seven hits - Evers earned his 14th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning that included two stirkeouts. Evers struck out the second and final outs of the ninth inning to seal the deal for the Bombers. Jack Nelson and Blake Nelson each had two hits for the Stars, who left nine men on base in the game. Drew Himes took the tough-luck loss, as he threw eight innings, giving two earned runs on eight hits in the losing effort. |
Tuesday, August 10, 2004Bombers Win Opener |
|---|
| Bluff City won the opener of the 2004 CICL Tournament Final with a 12-inning 3-2 victory over Twin City in Bloomington tonight.
Twin City's Ned Schauff and Bluff City's John Sternberg hooked up in a good pitching duel, with the Bombers breaking out 1-0 when in the top of 3rd, Carlos Jackson walked, stole second, and scored on RBI hit by A.J. Van Slyke. In the bottom of 5th, however, the Stars took the lead when Kyle O'Brien walked, J.T. Jones was hit by pitch, and both were doubled home by Brian Dinkelman. In the top of 6th, Brent Lacy walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on the second double of the game by Matt Gerst to tie the game at 2. Each team had mild chances before the 12th inning but could not push across the game winner. In the top of the 12th, Richard O'Brien reached on an infield error and was sacrificed to second by Greg Paiml. Kyle Smith then hit a bouncer up the middle off the second baseman's glove and O'Brien was able to score from second on a close play at the plate, Smith taking second on the play. Carlos Jackson then beat out a grounder to shortstop, Smith advancing to third base. On an attempted squeeze, Smith was tagged out at the plate with Jackson advancing to third before the inning ended on a fly ball. In the bottom of the 12th with league save leader Pat Evers on the mound, Mike Victor reached base on an error with 1 out. And just like Saturday night in Danville, another great catch in the outfield saved the game for the Bombers. Jack Nelson hit what looked like a game-tying extra base hit to left field but Brent Lacy made a great running catch to flag it down. Lacy had moved to left field only a couple of innings before from third base. Adam Tyler pitched 5 shutout innings in relief to earn the win while Evers picked up the save. Game two of the series is at 7:00 PM on Wednesday in Alton. |

| In the only game of the night, Bluff City defeated Danville 11-2 to move into the Championship series against Twin City beginning Tuesday night.
Brock Hewitt turned in a masterful nine inning performance in a do or die game three in Alton tonight. He allowed one earned run on six hits walked none and struck out four in his first complete game of the summer. He was staked to five runs in the first off Danville's Paul Coleman. Carlos Jackson had three hits and three runs scored, matching Scott Peden's three hit night, including a two run double in the first. Matt Gerst added a three run first inning homer to put the home team ahead for good. A.J. Van Slyke had two hits and two runs scored as Jason Rineheart had two hits, including a triple and a runs scored. Brent Lacy had a hit in four trips, with two runs scored and three RBI. Jeffrey Rea was the lone bright spot for Danville, as he had three of the Dans six hits, including a sixth ininng solo home run. Geoff Desmond, Jake Tranchant and Ricky Newman combined for the rest of the Danville attack with one hit each. |
Saturday, August 7, 2004Saturday Tournament Results |

| It took an extra inning, but the Twin City Stars won the second and final game of their best-of-three series with the Quincy Gems 5-4 tonight at Quincy. The Stars will move to the final round of the 2004 CICL Tournament beginning Tuesday evening at home. The field and starting time has yet to be announced.
Quincy's Chris Otten and Eric Theisen of the Stars hooked up in a good pitching duel with the Gems breaking out on top 1-0 on a Stars error in the first inning. The Gems extended the lead to 2-0 on a Jesse Brownell homer in the bottom of the 5th, but the Stars fought back to tie the game at 2 on a Jack Nelson RBI single in the 6th and a Nelson RBI double in the 8th. Jeff Niemec got the 3rd out for the Gems in the 8th before the Gems took the lead again in the bottom of the 8th on an RBI single by Pat Tumilty. The Stars seemingly snatched victory from defeat with 2 runs to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th inning. With 2 outs and nobody on base, the rally started when Sean Walker was hit by a pitch. EEric Sancucci ran for Walker and advanced to second base on a walk to Eric Sancucci. Sancucci then scored the tying run on a hit by J.T. Jones and Busch scored the go-ahead run when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. However, in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and nobody on, Jesse Brownell singled and scored on an RBI double by Andrew Farmer to send the game into extra frames. In the top of the 10th, Jack Nelson doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Mike Victor. The Gems did not go down quietly, however. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Tumilty walked and advanced to second on a single by Mike Victor. But winning pitcher Tony Harvot retired the next 2 batters to end the threat and the game. J. T. Jones finished with 2 hits and Jack Nelson with 3 hits for the Stars. Kevin Reynolds, Pat Tumilty and Jesse Brownell had 2 hits apiece for Quincy. In the other game tonight in Danville, Bluff City defeated the Dans 3-2 in a 16 inning 3 hour and 58 marathon to even their series at 1 game apiece. The rubber game of the series will be at 7:00 PM, Sunday night in Alton. Strikeouts, unearned runs and great catches by Bomber outfielders were the story of this exciting game. Danville pitchers fanned 20 Bombers and Bomber pitchers fanned 13 Dans (no records broken) as hitting and scoring was a rarity. Both of Danville's runs were unearned as was the first by the Bombers. Bluff City's Greg Paiml scored the game's first run on an error on his attempted steal of 3rd base in the 3rd inning. There weren't many threats until the bottom of the 8th when Danville tied the game on an error as Matt Daguio scored from 2nd base on a botched double play ball. Batters tried and batters whiffed until the top of 16th inning. Kyle Smith led off with a walk and was sacrificed to 2nd base by Carlos Jackson. On a fly out by Brent Lacy, Smith advanced to 3rd base. Van Slyke was intentionally passed and both he and Smith scored the go-ahead runs on a base hit by Scott Peden, the only earned runs of the evening. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Dans made it very interesting. With one out, Chris Coghlan singled and took second on an error by the outfield. Geoff Desmond was hit by a pitch. Danny McCarthy then hit a fly to left in which Adam Milauskas made a great catch to prevent the Dans from tying the game. Bryan Cartie then reached on an error as Coghlan scored to bring the Dans to within 1 run. Adam Milauskas then hit what appeared to be a game winning fly over everyone's head but Carlos Jackson snagged it in front of the left field wall to end the exciting game. Pat Evers the league's Save leader, earned the win with 3 innings of relief. His work followed 8 innings by starter Nathan Culp who allowed only 4 hits, 1 unearned run while striking out 5; and 5 innings of hitless pitching by Kyle Jones who also struck out 7 Dans. The tough loss went to Mike Bonura, who pitched the final 7.2 innings in relief for the Dans after starter Steve Hammond went 7 innings allowing 1 unearned run and fanning 8; and Nick DeCampli who retired the only batter he faced. Bonura struck out 10 Bombers in his relief effort. |
Friday, August 6, 2004Friday Tournament Results |

| The Twin City Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead after five innings, but it was clutch pitching by Dan Frega, who saved the day for the Stars against the Quincy Gems Friday night. Jeremy Busch led off the game with a double. A batter later Brian Dinkelman had a run scoring single, and the Stars had a quick 1-0 lead. Twin City added 2 insurance runs in the 5th, Kyle O'Brien lead off the inning with a walk. Busch smacked his second double of the game, scoring O'Brien. J.T. Jones then sacrified Busch to third, and Dinkelman followed with a double that scored Busch. Quincy got 2 runs back in the 7th, when Jeff Fontaine lead off the inning with his 5th homer, Adam Rosales and Michael Cowgill followed with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Kevin Reynolds doubled scoring Rosales and the Twin City lead was now 3-2. The Gems threatened to tie or possibly take the lead in the top of the ninth, so with 1 out and the based loaded, Dan Frega was called on to get the victory nailed down for Twin City. He responded by striking out the first batter he faced and got the other to ground out harmlessy to first. Drew Himes was Twin City's starting and winning pitcher and was relieved by Gary Calhoon prior to Frega's save. With the victory the Stars take a 1-0 lead in the best of 3 with Quincy with game #2 of the series scheduled for Saturday night in Quincy at 6:30 PM. If the Stars win, Twin City will play at home on Tuesday night in the opening game of the Championship round. If the Gems win tomorrow night, the two teams will play at 1:00 PM on Sunday at IWU's Jack Horenberger Field.
In Bluff City, the Danville Dans defeated the Bluff City Bombers in the opening game of their best-of-three series. Matt Votaw was 2-4 with a homer, Brandon Daguio was 2-4, Geoff Desmond was 1-4 with 2 RBI amd both Jeffrey Rea and Blake Womble had a hit and RBI. Josh Johnson pitched 5 innings and picked up the win while Nick DeCampli earned the save. For the Bombers, ace Erik Dessau came out in the fourth due to back pains and was followed by five good innings from Adam Tyler. A.J. Van Slyke and Adam Milauskas each homered for the Bombers in the losing effort; Scott Peden had 2 hits. The two teams square off at 6:30 in Danville on Saturday night, with the third game, if necessary, scheduled for 7:00 PM in Alton Sunday night. |

The CICL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Twin City Stars' Eric Thiesen who was 3-0 in 4 starts, had 3 complete games in those 4 starts, pitched 27 innings and allowed only 2 runs, just 1 of them earned. his 0.33 ERA led the league as did his opponent's batting average of only .138. Thiesen finished the regular season at 6-1 with a 1.95 ERA in helping the Stars win the regular season title. Monday, August 2, 2004Bluff City Clinches 2nd Place |
|---|
| In a tremendous 14 inning ballgame, the Bluff City Bombers clinched sole possession of second place in the regular season standings (and #2 tournament seed) with a 3-2 victory over the Quincy Gems at Quincy. An infield single by Kyle Smith with the bases loaded in the 14th proved to be the gamewinner after nearly 3-1/2 hours of tense nailbiting action. Smith's hit drove in Adam Milauskas who had reached base as a result of an error earlier in the inning when trying sacrifice bunt Matt Gerst who had walked to lead off the inning. After an intentional walk and a force play at home, Smith got the hit to plate Milauskas. The bases were still loaded bu the Bombers could not score another run. Quincy went 3 up, 3 down in the bottom of the inning against reliever Pat Evers, who pitched the last 3-2-3 innings for the victory. Greg Paiml and Scott Peden had the other RBI for the Bombers 3 hours earlier in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Quincy scored its runs in the 1st and 2nd inning on 4 hits, but could only manage 4 more hits over the next 12 innings against tough Bomber pitching. Jay Molina had the only Gem RBI along with 2 hits and Adam Rosales had 3 of the Gems' 8 hits. Evers gave up only 1 hit in his stint on the mound after teammate John Sternberg had held the Gems hitless over 3 previous innings.
In other action, Danville and Galesburg split a doubleheader with the Dans winning the first game 2-0 and the Pioneers the nitecap 3-2 in 8 innings. Danville's loss in the 2nd game along with the Bombers win eliminated any chance of the Dans or Gems catching them for second place. In the first game, RBI by Blake Womble and Jeffrey Rea were all the runs Dans pitchers Steve Hammond and Ty Davis needed to defeat the Pioneers in a close ballgame. With the game seemingly in hand - 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th - the Pioneers loaded the bases on a hit, error and intentional walk off starter and winner Hammond. Ty Davis was called on to save the game and he did so by striking out the only batter he faced. rea was the only player for either team to have 2 hits. In the second game, the dans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on a wild pitch but the Pioneers scored 2 of their own on RBI hits by Chris Smith and Nolan Keane in the 1st to take the lead. After Danville tied it in the 5th inning on an RBI groundout by Danny McCarthy, the Pioneers scored the winner on a one-out double by Smith to lead off the 7th, walks to Joe Napoli and Keane and a sacrifice fly by Keiji Szalo. Jake Tranchant and Geoff Desmond had 2 hits for the Dans and Court Jackson and Smith had 2 hits for the Pioneers. Derek DeClerck earned the win for the Pioneers with 2 hitless innings of relief. Here is Tuesday's schedule: Twin City @ Quincy (2) 5:00 PM |
Sunday, August 1, 2004Twin City Clinches Regular Season Crown |
|---|
| With 2 victories over the Danville Dans Sunday, the Twin City Stars clinched the regular season title and earned the #1 seed in the league's 2004 Tournament beginning this Friday, August 8. As #1 seed, the Stars earn the right to play 2 of the 3 games at home in each playoff series should they win and stay in the tournament.
The Stars clinched in convincing fashion by winning 12-4 and 7-1 over the Dans at Danville Stadium. In the 12-4 game, J.T. Jones, Brian Dinkelman, Jack Nelson, Sean Walker and Mick Curran each had 2 hits; Nelson and Walker each had 2 RBI; and Curran had 5 RBI including the game's big hit, a grand slam. Ned Schauff earned the victory to go 5-0. The Dans had a bases-loaded triple. In the 7-1 game, Dinkelman had 3 hits, Jack Nelson and Blake Nelson each had 2 RBI, and Mick Curran did the big damage again with 3 RBI on a hit and a walk. The Dans were held to 3 hits by Eric Theisen who went the distance for his 6th win against just 1 loss. Bluff City kept its hopes very alive for the #2 seed for the tournament with a 9-8 victory over the Galesburg Pioneers at Galesburg after trailing 6-0 after 1 inning. Carlos Jackson led the way back with 3 hits and an RBI; A.J. Van Slyke had 2 hits including a triple and 4 RBI; and Scott Peden had 2 hits and an RBI. Kyle Jones earned the win and Pat Evers picked up his league-leading 12th save. Galesburg's Joe Napoli, Court Jackson Nolan Keane, Jake Meisenbach and Ryan Schmidgall all had 2 hits; Napoli had 2 RBI, Meisenbach had 4 RBI on a grand slam in the 1st inning. In Springfield, the Quincy Gems and Springfield Rifles split two games with the Rifles winning the opener 5-4, Travis Scott hit a homer in the bottom of the 7th for the Rifles to send the game into extra innings and Jeff Meyer had the game winning RBI with a single in the bottom of the 8th.
