Monday, July 28, 2008Dragons Top Sliders 4-1 |
|---|
| Springfield shortstop Elliot Soto picked up a bizarre base hit with two outs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Dupage Dragons from handing the sliding Sliders their seventh straight loss by the score of 4-1 Monday night.
Soto swung at a 1-1 pitch from Andrew Estes and hit a dribbler down the third base line, but reacted as if the ball had gotten a piece of him for a foul ball. Dupage third baseman Phil Wunderlich fielded and threw to first for the apparent final out, and both teams emptied onto the field for postgame pleasantries. However, after brief conferences with both managers, Soto was awarded a base hit for reasons that would remain unspecified. Dragons catcher Matt Behren would make the play a moot points just moments later, picking Soto off first to end the game. Prior to the odd ruling, Dupage starter Brian Stroud (3-3) was the talk of the night, allowing a single unearned run in seven innings of work, walking three and striking out four. Jordan Tokarz led the charge on offense and defense, picking up a couple hits at the plate and a spectacular diving catch to his right at second base to snare a Ryan Mooney line drive that appeared ticketed to center field. The play preserved a no-hit bid for Stroud at the time, who wouldn't allowed a base knock until the sixth. The victory gives the Dragons six wins in their last seven contests. |

Danville's David Worthington for the second time in as many games drilled a home run in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Zach Walters started the 10th inning rally with a double to left-center and he scored on one of the Sliders six errors. Kaczrowski, Worthington, Walters and Drew Haynes led the Danville offense as all four batters had three hits. Choate and Ryan Mooney were the two Springfield hitters with three hits. Danville is back at home Thursday night against the DuPage Dragons. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Springfield returns to Robin Roberts Stadium on Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Dubois Bombers. |
Wednesday, July 16, 2008Bombers Top Gems Again 5-1 |
|---|
| Walks did in the Quincy Gems as the Dubois County Bombers swept the two game series, taking game two by the score of 5-1 on Wednesday night.
Dubois County loaded the bases with a walk and two hits but it appeared as though the Gems may escape the inning recording the second out on a foul pop up to the catcher. However that is when the Gems starter Shane Zegarac lost his control, walking the next three batters and then allowing a RBI single to give Dubois County a 4-0 lead. The Gems offense was unable to get on track despite out-hitting the Bombers 10-8 in the game. The Gems started the game by loading the bases on two hits and a walk but were unable to push a run across. They put two runners on the second but again came away empty. Finally the Gems were able to get on the board in the eighth when Jon Myers hit a towering shot to left field that just stayed inside the park, ending up with a double. Thomas McCormick followed with a broken bat RBI single to make the score 4-1. Dubois County got that run back with an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth. Zegarac takes the loss for Quincy going 3 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out four. Jarrett Casey picked up the win for Dubois County going six innings and allowing no runs on seven hits while striking out three. |

Tuesday, July 15, 2008Bombers Top Gems 3-2 |
|---|
| Dubois County held off a late Gems rally to win 3-2 at QU Stadium. Dubois County capitalized on Gems walks, with two runs coming from a lead off walk, and ended the game on play at the plate with an excellent throw from left fielder Daniel Nichols, preventing the tying run from scoring.
Dubois County got on the board first with runs in both the second and third innings, using a lead off walk in the second and reaching on a error at the start of the third to lead to the scoring. Bombers starter Marquardt was rolling threw the Gems, allowing just two hits in the first five innings, but Quincy rallied in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Kurtis Muller reached on a one out single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Goodro. Jon Myers followed with a single and then Shawn Marquardt lost hist control walking the next three batters, including walking the tying run in. The Bombers again used a walk to in order to push across a run, as Zach Rowles drew a walk to start the eighth inning. After a sacrifice moved Rowles to second, TJ Daily singled up the middle to give the Bombers a 3-2 lead. Quincy threatened in the ninth putting the lead off hitter Oliver Palmer on base via a walk. Palmer stole second base and Tyler Goodro stepped to the plate with two outs and Palmer at second base. Goodro singled to left and Palmer rounded third and headed for home but was thrown out on a outstanding throw by Bombers left fielder Daniel Nichols to end the game. Ochs picked up the win for Dubois County, going 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowing just two hits while striking out two. Monday, July 14, 2008Gems 8, Dragons 5 |
|---|
| The Quincy Gems scored three first inning runs and never looked back in defeating the DuPage County Dragons 8-5 Monday night at QU Stadium in Quincy, Illinois.
After Kurtis Muller hit a one-out RBI single, he promptly stole second and third base. Instead of pitching around the Gems’ next batter, Jon Myers, DuPage chose to pitch to him. Myers made the Dragons pay as he hit his league-leading 10th homerun of the season. It was a two-run, two-out towering homerun to left field to put Quincy out in front 3-0. Myers tied a Gems record with the homerun. He tied Ryan Duncheon and Pat Tumulty on the all-time homerun list. The game saw a combined 26 hits and six errors, four of those committed by the Dragons. Five of the eight runs the Gems scored were unearned. Justin Wilson led DuPage by going a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate with an RBI. Springfield would push their lead to 3-1 on an error by catcher TJ Dailey. The Bombers threatened in the ninth, scoring a run and loading the bases with one out. However, Sam Konnoff would ground into a game-ending double play to close out the ballgame. Sliders’ starter Logan Mahon took the win, firing 8 1/3 innings and allowing only one run. Charlie Gordon closed out the victory to earn the save. Travis Lamar took the loss for the Bombers despite firing seven strong innings, allowing only two earned runs. Sunday, July 13, 2008Dans Trail 9-0; Come Back to Defeat Dragons 10-9 |

Dans first baseman David Worthington dropped a pair of home runs on the Dragons, including the game-tying two-run blast in the top of the ninth, en route to an epic comeback to force extra innings. The teams traded zeros for four extra frames before Danville's Brooks Kimmey stroked a two-out RBI single off of Dragons reliever Tom Zelasko to plate the game-winning run. Dans reliever Tyler Hess picked up a well-earned victory with four hitless innings in which he struck out three and walked three. |
Saturday, July 12, 2008Sliders Shutout Dans 5-0 |
|---|
| A 45 minute weather delay didn't stop the Springfield Sliders (23-4) from getting their 23rd win of the season 5-0 over the Danville Dans (11-17) Saturday night in Springfield. Springfield's Bryce Shafer set the tone for the Sliders throwing 7 innings of shutout ball giving up 4 hits and striking out 9 Danville batters. Danville's Scott Kuhns also threw very well. The right-hander struck out 4 and walked 2 giving up only one unearned run. Kuhns took the loss.
Denny Vaughn scored the first and winning run for the Sliders in the 4th inning. With two outs Vaughn drew a walk and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He was then promptly driven in via a Matt Lenski bunt single. The Sliders scored again in the 6th inning by starting a rally with two outs and no runners on base. Ryan Mooney laced a two-out single to right field and was followed by a Jason Nantz single to left field. Bo Kinder then stepped up to the plate and drove a ball through the right side, scoring Mooney from second. A Sliders 3-run, 7th inning was kapped off by a Mooney single to center which scored two. Mooney finished the night with 4 hits in as many at-bats. The Sliders gave up five hits, all singles, to five different Danville hitters. Andrew Pollack, Rich Goodenow, Brooks Kimmey, Zach Walters and Drew Haynes had the hits for the Dans. The Dans travel to DuPage tomorrow while the Sliders play host to the Dubois County Dragons. |
Saturday, July 12, 2008Dragons Top Bombers Again 6-3 |
|---|
| The Dragons got a quality start from Tony Manville and three-hit effort from Matt Behren on the way to a 6-3 win, their fifth straight over Dubois County.
Dupage finds itself four games over .500 for the first time in 2008 following a 13-hit outburst in which eight of the nine Dragon starters collected at least one hit. In addition to Behren's night, Dave Reynolds followed up last night's victory on the mound with a multi-hit evening. Nick Popescu and Jordan Tokarz also collected a pair of hits each. Phil Wunderlich would have joined them if not for a spectacular diving catch by Bomber center fielder Eric Hanlon in the third. Manville allowed a single run in seven innings, striking out eight over that span to pick up his second win of the season. Justin Higdon went three innings in a losing effort, allowing the first five Dragons run to cross before leaving. Joe Ochs was stellar in relief for the Bombers, holding Dupage to one run in four innings of work. |
Friday, July 11, 2008Sliders Edge Dans 2-1 |
|---|
| The Springfield Sliders (22-4) had just enough offense and a great outting by Bryce Butt to pull out a 2-1 victory Friday night in Springfield against the Danville Dans (11-16). Butt went the distance striking out 10 and walked only one en route to his fifth win of the season. Danville starter John Foley struck out two Sliders and walked four during his seven innings of work.
The Sliders got onto the scoreboard first in the fourth innings when Tyler Choate led the inning off with a free pass. Choate advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then onto third thanks to a Matt Lenski sacrifice bunt. Sam Houston State's Ryan Mooney wasted no time lifting a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give the Sliders a lead they would never relinquish. Springfield scored again in the seventh and were again fueled by a leadoff walk, this time to designated hitter Bo Kinder. Kinder moved to second on an Elliot Soto single. Both runners advanced a base when Ryan Ashe laid a bunt down the third base line and beat the throw. Junior second baseman Vincente Cafaro gave knocked in Kinder with yet another sacrifice fly to centerfield. Foley then got out of the inning by getting Chris Gacom to roll into a double play. Danville made a run in the ninth inning when Dan Kazrowski dropped a double just inside the right field line. With two outs and Kazrowski on second, pinch hitter Tyler Park laced a double off of the left field wall cutting the Sliders' lead in half. Bryce Butt then got David Washington to ground out to third to end the threat and the game. Danville and Springfield will face each other again tomorrow in Springfield beginning at 7:05 p.m. |
Friday, July 11, 2008Dragons Shutout Bombers 2-0 |
|---|
| Dave Reynolds, Tom Zelasko, and Brian Stroud combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dupage Dragons topped the Dubois County Bombers 2-0 on Friday night in Lisle.
Phil Wunderlich lined a two-run double to the left-centerfield gap in the bottom of the first, and that would be all the offense either team would muster. In his first start of the 2008 CICL season, Reynolds maintained his 0.00 ERA with seven scoreless innings, during which he struck out six and walked three. Dubois starter Chad Edwards took the hard-luck loss, allowing a pair of runs over six and two-thirds innings while scattering eight hits and striking out five. |
Thursday, July 10, 2008Dragons Score 3 in 9th to Defeat Dans |
|---|
| The DuPage Dragons scored three runs in the ninth inning to pull out a 7-5 victory over the Danville Dans at Danville Stadium on Thursday night.

Quincy captured the opener 5-1 in the 10 innings behind the pitching of right-hander Brian Morrell, who went nine innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, while walking none and striking out five. The Gems won the game scoring four times in the 10th inning - all with two outs. Alex Acheson started the rally with a single, followed by a single from Oliver Palmer and a walk by Kurtis Muller to load the bases. The first run of the frame scored when Jon Myers, who went 1-for-4, was hit by a pitch from Danville's Worth Tate. Thomas McCormick followed with a two-run single to right and Myers scored on an error by the Dans right fielder. Quincy's Michael Adamson closed out the win, getting the final three outs, the last two coming on a double play off the bat of Danville's Tyler Park. In the nightcap, Danville jumped out a 5-0 lead with a single run in the first and four in the second with Dan Kaczrowski, who was 2-for-4, delivering a two-run single to right, followed by a run-scoring hit from Brooks Kimmey. The Dans lead was erased with a four-run fourth inning by the Gems. Andy Whewell, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, had the big hit with a two-run single and Oliver Palmer drove him home with the game-tying run. Both teams had an opportunity to take the lead in the later innings. Danville's Andrew Pollak led off the fifth with a triple to left-center, but he was stranded at third. Quincy had its best chance to take the lead in the sixth when Adamson reached on an error and advanced to second on an error. Whewell sacrificed Adamson to third, but he was left there as Danville's Tyler Hess had a strike out and Dans shortstop Zach Walters made a great play to end the inning. Kimmey reached on an error to lead off the seventh and was sacrificed to second by Pollak. After a groundout, Worthington delivered the game-winning hit on a 1-1 pitch from Jesse Martin. |

|---|
| A sixth inning grand slam from Tyler Goodro was the offensive highlight for the Quincy Gems, as they took a wild one from the Dragons Tuesday night 13-12.
The Gems had put five runs on the board before recording their first hit, a consequence of a pair of Scott Sexton errors and a slew of walks issued by Dupage starter Eric Wyman. The Dragons, coming off a season-high-tying 13-run outburst the night before, picked up right where they left off, scoring eight runs in the game's first three frames. Goodro's sixth inning blast would give the Gems the lead for good, though the Dragons plated two in the ninth, had the tying run at second, and the winning run at first when Justin Behm struck out to end the game. Mitchell Fairly relieved Quincy starter Greg Hellhake, allowing a single run over three and a third innings to earn the victory. Tom Filip, the man Goodro victimized for the grand slam, takes the loss. |

The run total matched the offense's most prodigious outing since its 13-9 opening night victory over the Gems. |---|
| Three Danville pitchers combined to toss a five-hit shutout as the Dans defeated the DuPage Dragons 3-0 on Saturday night at Danville Stadium. It was the first shutout of the season for Danville (10-12).
John Foley went the first seven innings, allowing just four hits, walking none and striking out three. Austin Ross tossed a scoreless eighth, walking one and striking out one and Greg Houston earned his third save with a double play ball and a ground out in the ninth. The Dans got all the offense it would need in the first inning off DuPage starter Andrew Beatty (0-3). Dan Kaczrowski was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Andrew Pollak, who went 2-for-4, followed with an RBI single to center to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Danville added two insurance runs in the sixth, the first coming on a run-scoring double to left-center by Tyler Park, scoring Johnny Dishon from first base.
