In the 6th the Sliders pushed across four runs on three hits and one Quincy error. Two Springfield outfielders, Ashe and Kinder, stroked two-out singles to centerfield to give the Sliders the eventual winning run and the insurance runs that they would need. Wednesday, June 18, 2008Springfield Defeats DuPage 8-1 |

Tuesday, June 17, 2008Gems Rally Late For Win over Dubois County |
|---|
| The Quincy Gems rallied late for a 4-3 win over visiting Dubois County. Dubois County took an early 2-0 lead before Quincy tied the game in the third and eventually broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to take a 4-3 lead.
Dubois County started the game with a single by Zach Rowles. Rowles moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored two batters later on a single up the middle by TJ Dailey. The Bombers extended their lead with another run in the third, with Rowles again singling to start the inning. After he swiped second base the Bombers would load the bases with a walk and infield single. With two outs Jared Baehl singled in Rowles to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead. Quincy tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning with Zach Gerler doubling to start the frame. Kevin Lee followed with an RBI single. Kenny Burns reached on a single to right field and the Gems loaded the bases when Oliver Palmer reached on an error while trying to move the runners over. After a force out at home Tyler Goodro hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that would allow Burns to tag and score, tying the game at 2-2. The Gems took the lead in the fourth when they used three singles in the inning, including a RBI single by Burns that scored Alex Acheson, to make the score 3-2. However the Bombers answered back in the top of the fifth when Rich Gorman walked and would later score on an errant throw by the Gems catcher. With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth the Gems used a timely lead-off triple by Jon Myers to get a rally started. Myers ripped a shot into the left centerfield gap that rolled to the wall to give Quincy a runner at third and no outs. The Gems wasted little time in pushing the run across when Andy Petz followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Quincy a 4-3 lead. Michael Adamson came on in the ninth for Quincy and pitched a nearly flawless inning to record the save, going one inning and allowing one hit while striking out the final two batters of the game. Devin VanBrooker picked up the win going 1 1/3 innings of relief while allowing just one hit and striking out two. Matt Antos took the loss for Dubois County going two innings of relief and allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Quincy improves to 4-5 on the season while Dubois County falls to 2-7. Monday, June 16, 2008Player and Pitcher of the Week - Week #1 |
|---|
| Opening week of the 2008 CICL season was a long week, extending from opening day on June 5 through Father's Day, June 15. The number of games played ranged from 7 for the Springfield Sliders to 9 for the DuPage County Dragons.
The Player of the Week honor for the first week goes to Rich Gorman of the Dubois County Bombers. Gorman started and played in 6 of the Bombers 8 games for the week, and led the league in several offensive categories: batting average at .652 (15-23), slugging at .913, on-base percentage at .679, hits with 15, doubles with 6, total bases with 21, and RBI with 8 (tied for the lead). Gorman, a switch-hitting infielder, is from Los Altos, California, and will be a senior this fall at California - Berkely. The first Pitcher of the Week honor for 2008 goes to another Dubois County Bomber, left-hnaded starting pitcher Jarrett Casey. For the week, Casey was 2-0 in 2 starts, pitcing a total of 14 innings and not allowing an earned run. He allowed 10 hits, fanned 5 and walked 5. Casey's 2 victories were the Bombers only wins of the opening week. Jarrett will be a junior this fall at Indiana University, and hails from Indianapolis. |
Sunday, June 15, 2008Casey Pitches Bombers to 1-0 Victory |
|---|
| Sunday night at League Stadium featured a classic pitcher’s duel between Bomber Jarrett Casey and Dragon Brian Stroud. A single unearned run decided this contest, a 1-0 score in the Bombers’ favor.
The game’s lone run came courtesy of an Eric Hanlon RBI double to score Zach Rowles. The Dragons threatened a couple of times but could never plate a run. Rich Gorman went 2-for-2 to continue his early season massacre of CICL pitching. He and Hanlon accounted for all three Bomber base hits. Justin Wilson and Dave Reynolds finished with two hits apiece for DuPage County who actually outhit the Bombers nine to three. Jarrett Casey (2-0) picked up the win. Casey fired eight shutout innings to run his consecutive scoreless streak to 14. Casey has accounted for both of the Bomber wins this season. Chase Joiner came on in the ninth to pick up his first save. Brian Stroud (0-2) took the hard-luck loss for the Dragons. The Bombers enjoy an off day on Monday before heading to the road for three games. |
Sunday, June 15, 2008Sliders Hold Off Danville 11-8 |
|---|
| Danville put six runs on the scoreboard in the 9th inning but it was not enough to complete the comeback in Springfield as the Sliders won 11-8. Kaskaskia Community College's Logan Mahon earned his first win of the season going six innings and striking out three. The Sliders were led offensively by Andrew Quinnette's three-hit performance and multiple hit days by Elliott Soto, Chris Gacom and Jimmy Swift.
The Sliders took the lead, and never relinquished it, in the 3rd inning when Gacom drove in Soto with a double to left center. Gacom later scored on triple by Quinnette. In the 5th the Sliders sent 11 batters to the plate. The seven run inning gave them the cushion they needed to survive Danville's 9th inning rally. In the 6th, Vincente Cafaro hit an inside-the-park homerun to right center. The throw from the relay man was accurate to the plate but Cafaro's hustle and head-first slide gave the Sliders their 11th run of the night. That run ultimately allowed the game to end with the tying run at the plate instead of the go-ahead run. Danville was led offensively by Dan Kaczrowski's three hits and Drew Haynes and Pollack's multi-hit performances. Danville took advantage of 13 walks by the Sliders' pitching staff in their comeback efforts. Danville stroked five singles and earned two walks in the 9th. Florida Atlantic's Dan Marcacci earned the final two outs for the Sliders and his second save of the season. The Sliders host DuPage tomorrow at 7:05. The remaining CICL teams are off on Monday. |
