Dragons Bats Silent in Loss to Dans
The DuPage Dragons were shutout for the first time this season as they lost to the Danville Dans 2-0. Three pitchers combined for the five-hitter as Connor Sestak (2-1) started and went seven innings before handing the game to Zach Scott, who worked the eighth, and A.J. Griffin, who picked up his first save in the ninth.

Reid Suitor (0-1) made his first start of the season for the Dragons (8-10) and struggled early. Ryan Schimpf led off the ballgame with a double which was followed by a walk to Ben Wolgamott. Schimpf took third on a wild pitch and came into score on a sacrifice fly by Chris McGuiness, who was robbed of extra bases on a diving catch by leftfielder Dave Reynolds.

McGuiness struck again in the third inning, this time allowing nobody to catch the baseball as he lined a shot over the right-field fence for his first home run of the summer to put the Dans (8-9) in front by two.

From there, it was a game of missed chances for the Dragons. In the bottom of the second, the Dragons had runners on second and third but Johnny Lee struck out to end the inning. In the third, Adam Melker walked to start a potential rally but was picked off by Sestak.

More bad baserunning came in the fifth for the Dragons after Lee singled to start the inning followed by a Melker walk. With Sean Osborne looking to lay down a sacrifice bunt, Lee was picked off second, which was followed by Melker getting doubled off on a line drive to short off Osborne's bat.

The Dragons threatened briefly in the sixth inning, but Ryan Duffy grounded into a double play to stop that rally. In the ninth, Dan Weston doubled with two outs but Eric Stephens grounded out to end the ballgame.

One bright spot for the Dragons was the work of Kenny Smalley out of the bullpen as he threw four scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and no walks.

The Dragons will face off with the Dans tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 4:30 PM in Danville Stadium. The Dragons' next home game will be on Thursday, July 12 th also against the Dans.

Dragons Win Wild One in 11 Innings, 6-5
The DuPage Dragons took advantage of three errors and 17 runners left on base by the Dubois County Bombers as the Dragons (8-9) came back to win 6-5 in 11 innings. The Dragons overcame deficits in the fourth, seventh, ninth and 11 th innings before finally putting away the victory.

The Bombers (7-9) started the scoring in the first inning as Bradley Goldsmith led off with a single and came around to score when Chris Affinito hit into a fielder's choice against starter Mike Manns who worked five-plus innings while allowing nine hits.

The Dragons waited until the fourth to get their first hit against Dallas Sims as Adam Melker began the frame with a single. After getting moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, Melker scored on a base hit by Ryan Duffy to tie the game at 1-1.

In the fifth, Dubois took the lead as Rich Gorman singled home Goldsmith to make it 2-1 while Derek Melton hit in Gorman with a single to make it 3-1. The Dragons clawed back in the seventh with two outs as shortstop Andy Smith booted a groundball to cut the Bombers' lead to one. Dan Weston tied the game at 3-3 with a single to score Cole Tyrell.

Smith picked up his first base hit of the season to start the top of the ninth against reliever Bradley Riegler. After a steal, Smith came home on Casey Martin's opposite field single to put the Bombers in front 4-3.

The Dragons were down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth but managed to tie the game on a gift from Melton who dropped a routine fly ball which allowed Tyrell to come in and kept the Dragons breathing.

In the 11th, Melton sought revenge after Affinito started the inning with a double off Erik Forestiere (1-1). Melton didn't waste any time lining a ball over the head of rightfielder Chad Bisnette to bring home pinch runner Venson Doster which put the Bombers on top 5-4.

Control became an issue for the Bombers in the bottom of the 11th as Sean Osborne walked to start the inning against Dylan Cupples. Dubois went back to the pen as Michael Manus (0-1) came in for the save. After a walk to Johnny Lee which put runners on first and second, Weston attempted to bunt each runner up a base. On the play, Manus fired the ball over the head of third baseman Brian Thomas and over the fence down the left field line which allowed Osborne to score the tying run and set the winning run, Lee, up at third.

With Bisnette at the plate and behind in the count, Manus uncorked a wild pitch. Lee sprinted for the plate as catcher Matt Hamaker retrieved the ball but his throw to Manus covering the plate was low and Lee slid across safely to win the ballgame.

The Dragons will hit the road tomorrow night to face the Danville Dans at 6:30 PM. The Dragons will host the Dans on Friday night at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex at 7 PM.

Gems Defeat Dans 4-2
The Quincy Gems snapped the Danville Dans four-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory before 820 at Danville Stadium on Tuesday night.

Quincy (11-5) broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the eighth as the Gems used a pair of hit-and-run plays to score one run and set up the second run. Zach Troilo got the inning started the frame with a one-out single to left, that was followed by Matt Wille's single to right on a hit-and-run to put runners on first and third.

The Gems used another hit-and-run with Thomas McCormick at the plate, staying out a potential inning-ending double play. McCormick's groundout scored Troilo and moved Wille up to second. Wille stole second and scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the eighth for an insurance run.

Quincy's Matt Deain earned his fourth save, recording the final six outs allowing just a one-out walk in the eighth. Austin Siwiec got the win for the Gems as Tyler Cox started, allowing just four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Dragons Win Pitching Duel 1-0 over Dubois County
Tough pitching and error-free defense lifted the DuPage Dragons to a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Dubois County Bombers. Matt Jernstad (2-2) worked seven scoreless innings while allowing just six hits before handing the game off to Dan Weston, who recorded his first save of the season, while striking out four of the six hitters he faced.

It was a game of missed opportunities early for both ballclubs as the Bombers (7-8) had a chance to break through in the first inning after Bradley Goldsmith started the game with a double. Following Andy Smith's ground out, Goldsmith was picked off trying to steal third by Jernstad which ended the threat.

The Dragons (7-9) left runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but were able to push home the game's only run in the bottom of the third. Adam Melker walked with one out and put himself in a scoring chance as he stole second and third on consecutive pitches. After the thievery by Melker, Ryan Duffy planted a double off the right field wall to bring him in.

With the lead, Jernstad went to work and got some help from his defense. In the fourth, the Bombers had Casey Martin on first base when he took off for second. A strong throw by Sean Osborne put Martin in a pickle before he was tagged out to end the scoring chance for Dubois County.

The Bombers ran themselves out of the fifth inning as well. This time, Casey Hanrahan doubled to get into scoring position but was thrown out trying to score on a single off the bat of Eric Smith when Chad Bisnette threw a bullet to the plate. Seeing the strike come in from right field, Hanrahan tried to get back to third but was picked off by Osborne.

From there, the Bombers would get only one more baserunner as Martin led off the seventh with a single but was stranded at third after Hanrahan flew out to center to end the frame.

The Dragons also had their fair share of scoring chances but ended up leaving 10 runners on including four in their final three at-bats, all in scoring position.

The Dragons will finish their three-game series with the Dubois County Bombers tomorrow night at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex at 7 PM.

Dragons Top Bombers 11-5
It was a big night for Naperville natives Connor Powers and Johnny Lee as the DuPage Dragons beat the Dubois County Bombers 11-5. Powers homered in his first at-bat with the ballclub while Lee knocked in three runs.

The Dragons (6-9) fell behind early as Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a single against starting pitcher Brad Altbach (1-2). Three batters later, Casey Martin singled which allowed Goldsmith to score the game's first run.

In the bottom of the first, Powers didn't waste any time making an impact with his new team as he smacked a home run to left-center field off Eric Smith (2-1) to tie the game.

In the fourth, the Bombers (7-7) were bit by their defense. An error by shortstop Wes Fink allowed Powers to reach to start the inning. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Gabe DeMarco put the Dragons ahead for good with an RBI single. Eric Stephens hit into a fielder's choice which brought Dave Reynolds in to make it 3-1. It became 4-1 after Ryan Duffy's RBI single and 6-1 after Lee drove in two more with a base hit.

Dubois County attempted to make it interesting in the fifth as Goldsmith and Langdon Potts picked up run-scoring singles against Altbach, who lasted six innings while allowing three runs on five hits.

The Dragons struck for three more in the bottom of the sixth as Powers delivered an RBI triple which brought Duffy into score. Duffy reached on another error by Fink, who made three on the night. In all, the Bombers made six errors in the game which led to eight unearned runs. An error by rightfielder Derek Melton allowed Powers to score which made it 7-3. It became 8-3 after Cole Tyrell singled home a run.

Each team scored twice more in their halves of the seventh. The Dragons made three errors in the top of the inning which plated the Bombers' tallies. In the bottom of the seventh, Lee and Adam Melker came through with consecutive RBI doubles.

After committing four errors and allowing 14 hits last night, the DuPage Dragons make five errors and give up 13 hits as they lose to the Quincy Gems 11-3 with Quincy taking four of five in their home and home series.

The Dragons (5-9) got off to a good start as they went up 2-0 in the second inning after Gabe DeMarco's opposite-field two-run shot off starting pitcher Kyle Heim (2-0). It was DeMarco's second homer in as many nights.

That would be the only time the Dragons would hold the lead in this ballgame as the Gems (10-4) took control in the bottom of the second. Jon Myers walked to start the frame and took third on Tom McCormick's single. Cory Coquillard brought Myers home with a sacrifice fly while Curt Courtwright tied the contest with a single to bring home McCormick.

Unfortunately, Reynolds was thrown out on the play, trying to stretch it into a double. In the seventh, Reid Suitor made his Dragons debut and allowed three runs on a Coquillard sacrifice fly, a Zurliene single and a passed ball. The Gems finished off the scoring in the eighth as Coquillard walked with the bases loaded.

Frank Allen (1-1) matched Manns pitch for pitch until the bottom of the sixth inning when Cole Tyrell reached on a one-out walk followed by a Dave Reynolds single which put Tyrell at third. That set things up for catcher Ryan Duffy who plated the game's only run with an opposite field single.

The Gems (8-4) threatened in the seventh after Jon Myers led off with a walk. Dragons manager Mark Viramontes then turned to Reynolds for the save opportunity. Reynolds didn't go easy on the hearts of the Dragons' fans as Quincy had runners on second and third with two outs before Reynolds struck out Curt Courtwright to end the ballgame.

Gems Top Dragons 6-2
A four-run seventh inning sparked the Quincy Gems to a 6-2 win over the DuPage Dragons at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. Designated hitter Cory Coquillard opened the big inning with a tie-breaking home run off starting pitcher Matt Jernstad (1-1) who allowed four runs in six-plus innings.

Coquillard got the Gems (7-3) rolling in the second inning as he came through with a two-out single to bring in Jon Myers, who scored on a close play at the plate. Centerfielder Adam Melker threw a one-hop strike to catcher Sean Osborne who caught the ball before Myers got to the dish, but Myers was still able to sneak by with a head-first dive.

Quincy would regain the lead in the sixth as Tyson Blaser drove in Wes Freie with a sacrifice fly after Freie doubled to start the inning and took third on a sacrifice bunt. The Dragons played a similar style of small ball in the bottom of the sixth as a walk to Melker was the prelude to a sacrifice bunt by Osborne and a groundout by Cole Tyrell which pushed Melker to third. Dave Reynolds tied the game at 2-2 with a run-scoring single.

With Jernstad tiring in the seventh, the Gems would get four runs off him and Bradley Riegler. Coquillard's homer made it 3-2. Gems Hammer Dragons
After winning their home opener on Friday, the DuPage Dragons fell to the Quincy Gems 12-1 in the series finale at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. The Dragons (1-2) trailed 2-1 until the final two innings when the Gems (2-1) crossed the plate 10 times.

All was going well for the Dragons early in the ballgame, starting in the top of the first as rightfielder Eric Stephens gunned down Zach Troilo at the plate to end the Gems’ scoring threat. In the bottom of the first, Gabe DeMarco’s two-out single allowed Cole Tyrell to cross the plate as the Dragons took a 1-0 lead.

That would be the only run the Dragons would score, however, as Quincy’s pitching staff shut down the Dragons’ offense. Winning pitcher Dave Nykiel (1-0) held the Dragons to just six hits over six innings while the Quincy bullpen only allowed one hit over the last three including Andy Deain who came on in the 8th inning and recorded his first save.

The Gems would begin their scoring in the 2nd inning as first baseman Cory Coquillard shot a double down the third base line to score Jon Myers. The game would remain tied until the 6th inning when Myers hit the Gems’ first home run of the season which put Quincy in front 2-1.

The game would stay that way until the 8th when sophomore Bradley Riegler entered the game for the Dragons. After recording the first two outs with ease, Riegler allowed Ryan McFarlane to reach base on an infield single. That was followed by Coquillard’s second RBI double of the night which made it 3-1. Coquillard was then brought home on a single by Brett Zurliene.

Matters became worse for the Dragons in the 9th when Kenny Smalley came on to pitch. Scott Hauber doubled home Troilo who reached on a triple to start the inning. Three batters later, Myers would nail his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, to make it 8-1. Quincy would add four more runs against Smalley before the final out was recorded.

Brad Altbach (0-1) started for the Dragons and worked six innings while allowing just one earned run and five hits.

The Dragons will hit the road on Monday night as they face the Dubois County Bombers at 7 PM with Matt Jernstad expected to start for the first time this season. The Dragons’ next home game will be on Wednesday, June 20th when the Quincy Gems return to the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex.

Dragons Win Home Opener
After a controversial loss in their season opener in Quincy, the DuPage Dragons were successful in their first game of the 2007 season at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex as they beat the Quincy Gems 9-5.

The Dragons (1-1) fell behind early as the Gems (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by catcher Tyson Blaser. Quincy went up 3-0 in the 4th inning on a two-run single by right fielder Matt Wille who went 1-for-4 in the game with two runs scored.

Offensively, the Dragons did all of their damage in the middle three innings, starting with the 4th when three runs came across without the benefit of a hit thanks to two errors by the Gems. The second of the two errors, made by shortstop Curt Courtwright, came with two outs on a ground ball off the bat of catcher Sean Osborne. Courtwright scooped the ball cleanly but uncorked a wild throw which allowed Kenny Smalley and Chad Bisnette to score which tied the game.

In the 5th, the Dragons broke through for five more runs. Designated hitter Gabe DeMarco broke the tie with an RBI double while Smalley, Dave Reynolds and Osborne all added to the lead with run-scoring singles. Smalley would finish the Dragons’ scoring in the 6th inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Quincy pitching staff walked 10 batters in the game while throwing three wild pitches. Patrick Doyle (0-1) suffered the loss as he allowed five runs, two earned, over four-plus innings.

Andrew Beatty (1-0), who led the Dragons in victories (7) last season worked six innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Erik Forestiere and Matt Jernstad worked scoreless innings of relief in the 7th and 8th innings, respectively, while Smalley worked the 9th inning while allowing the game’s final two runs.

2008 Season Begins Thursday
The 45th consecutive season of play for the Central Illinois Collegiate League begins this Thursday, June 7 with the Dubois County Bombers at the Danville Dans and the DuPage County Dragons at the Quincy Gems, both games beginning at 6:30 PM.

The 2007 season is a transition year for the league - a changing of the guard - in league leadership and direction for the future. This season marks the 7th time in its 45 year history in which the league fielded only 4 teams. The league has had 5 teams 11 times, 6 teams 22 times, 7 teams 4 seasons and 8 teams only once.

The league has one official new applicant for 2008 and three other groups strongly considering application for 2008; hence this is a transition year.

Leading the league to the future is new Commissioner, Frank Pergolizzi, a principal with The Team, a sports consulting business headquartered in Dublin, Ohio. Frank joined The Team after a long and successful career in collegiate athletics, the details of which can be found on the company bio page at The Team web site.
