In Huntingburg, Indiana, tonight, the Dubois County Bombers swept a doubleheader over the Galesburg Pioneers to extend their record to 12-3 and lengthen their league lead over Danville to one full game in the standings.

In the first game, the Bombers “bombed away” collecting 15 hits on their way to a 16-2 win. Cole Uebelhor went the distance for the Bombers for his first win against no losses, allowing 7 hits and no earned runs.

Chris Schmidt had 2 hits and 3 runs; Ryan Basham had 3 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI; Mike Murray had 3 hits, 3 RBI and 2 runs; Jeff Cunningham had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI; and Kyle Smith had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Dubois won the second game 5-2, with Chris Antonides pitching 6 innings for the victory and Dusty Baker picking up his 3rd save. Ryan Basham led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI, 2 scoring on a double in the 5th inning. Kyle Smith also had 2 hits and an RBI. The Pioneers had only 4 hits, with Steven Scott and Kevin Diete driving in the team’s 2 runs.

In Danville, the Dans outlasted the Twin City Stars in a 14-13 slugfest that saw the Dans set a new league record for triples in a single game with 6, and the Dans and Stars together set a new record for triples by both teams in a single game. More on that later.

The Dans and Stars combined for 30 hits tonight with the Dans getting 18 of them, 11 for extra bases including the 6 triples, 4 doubles and a homer. Justin Snyder had 2 hits, 2 RBI including a double and homer; Jake Tranchant had 2 hits, 2 RBI; Chuck Sindlinger had 3 hits, 2 RBI; Dusty Napoleon had 2 hits, 3 RBI; and Mitch Moreland, Jeff Flagg, Danny Worth, and Nick Hardy each had 2 hits.

Twin City fought back from an 8-0 and 12-4 deficit to tie the game with 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning. However, the Dans scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the inning when Moreland tripled and scored on an error.

As for the triples record, the old record of 4 by one team had been set by the Dans in 1989 and duplicated by them again in 1995. That 1989 game also saw the Twin City Stars getting 1 triple to set the combined teams record of 5. Tonight’s triples were by Jake Tranchant, Chuck Sindlinger, Dusty Napoleon, Garrett Gipe, Mitch Moreland and Nick Hardy. Brian Dinkelman of the Stars also tripled helping set a new combined record of 7 triples in a game. Click here to see an updated Record Book

The Quincy Gems downed the Dupage Dragons 12-3 in CICL play on Thursday night at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex.

Quincy scored once more in the third to take a 5-0 lead before the Dragons made things interesting in the fourth.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Eddie Smith drew a walk to score the first run of the game. Eaton Rincon followed with a 2-RBI single to center field to cut the lead to 5-3.

In the top of the fifth however, Quincy scored five runs and chased Brown from the game to regain control and take a 10-3 lead. Brown was hit with the loss after allowing 10 hits, and eight earned runs in 4.2 innings.

The Dragons managed just six hits against Quincy pitching. Rincon had three of them going 3-for-4 at the plate. Albert Carrizales also had multiple hits. Quincy took the series from the Dragons with the win, their first series victory of the year. Jay Molina, Pat Tumilty, and Jake Owens all had three hits for Quincy.

And finally on this busy night in the hot and very dry Midwest, East Peoria pounded out 19 hits along with 5 walks to score 10 runs and left 14 runners stranded in a 10-5 victory over the slumping Springfield Rifles who dropped their 10th game in a row after a 3-2 start.

In Lisle, the Dupage Dragons shutout the Quincy Stars 5-0 on Wednesday night at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. Miles Morgan fired his second complete game shutout of the season.

Morgan (3-1) rebounded after his first loss of the season in Dubois County to return to the form that earned him CICL Pitcher of the Week honors for the first week of the season. Morgan worked the whole game, allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out six on the way to his second complete game shutout.

A hot, humid night on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan, and Dan Frega was right in step as he was throwing heat as well. At one point, Frega retired 16 Danville Dans in order while reaching 92 on the radar gun. The loss knocked Danville out of 1st place, a half game behind Dubois County.

The Stars scored all the runs they would need in the 2nd when lead off hitter Ross McCoy walked. Two outs later Nick Achberger worked the count for a walk. Blake Nelson then delivered a 2 out single which scored McCoy. Keeping the 2-out rally going Julian Brown singled, scoring Achberger. Brian Dinkelman then hit a scorcher down the left field line just barely landing in fair territory for a clutch 2-out double, when the dust settled (literally) Brown and Nelson had scored and the Stars had a 4 run lead. This turned out to be the only bad inning Danville's hurler, Grant Payton, would have, allowing only 1 more hit and striking out 9 Star batters in 6 innings of work.

Danville got to a tiring Dan Frega in the 7th when Chuck Sindlinger doubled, followed by a Dusty Napoleon RBI single. Twin City answered in their half of the 7th with 3 more runs the big hit being a double off the bat of Asif Shah, plating 2 runs.

Danville got on the board again in the 9th. Chuck Sindlinger and Dusty Napoleon both walked, and Mitch Moreland singled, loading the bases, Sindlinger scored on a passed ball, giving Danville their 2nd and final run.

In East Peoria, the Scrappers won their fourth in a row, 9-4 over the Springfield Rifles.

Ross Kelling

C.J. Webb

A 5 run fifth inning gave the Scrappers an 8-0 cushion. The big blow in the inning was a 2 run bases-loaded double by C.J. Webb. Shane Elenz had three hits and a home run for the Scrappers, while Jeff Darnall and Gilbert Marlowe added 2 hits a piece. Darnall, Webb, and Ross Kelling all had 2 RBI's for East Peoria. Kelling also homered in the 7th for the Scrappers.

Tuesday's Results
After nearly a 2 hour lightning delay, the Twin City Stars and Danville Dans made the wait worthwhile with an excellent 1 run game that left the home town fans in Danville with the finish they were wanting. Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, Danville scored 2 runs on 1 hit to pull out a 3-2 victory to enable the Dans to recapture sole possession of 1st place as Dubois County was idle this evening.

A one-out walk by Chad Crosswhite got things started. Pinch runner JoJo Tann then went to second when Jeff Flagg reached on an error. > was called upon to pinch run for Flagg. Both runners advanced on a ground out to third by Danny Worth. With the game on the line, Cory Barton then singled down the right field line to drive in the tying and winning runs enabling the Dans to improve to 10-3 on the season.

The winning pitcher was reliever Neil Schenk who pitched 3 innings of one-hit baseball in relief of starter Matt Couch.

The Dans had a total of only 4 hits. Twin City was led by 2 doubles by Brian Dinkelman and RBI singles by Ross McCoy and Shan Sullivan in the 3rd inning to give the Stars an early 2-0 lead. The Dans scored its first run on the second triple of the game by Player-of-the-Week Justin Snyder and an RBI groundout by Jake Tranchant.

In the final game of the evening in Lisle, in an extra-inning game that took over four hours to complete, Quincy tied the game at seven in the top of the ninth when Jason White drew a bases-loaded walk to score Travis Sweet. The Gems then scored two more in the eleventh as White again came through with a single. Billy Duffy nearly threw out Billy McKinney at the plate, but he slid in just ahead of the tag. A Nathan Emrick sacrifice fly scored the other run. Brian Shust got to third but couldn't score in the bottom of the inning.

Bobby Mahon earned the win in relief as Victor Ferrante took the loss. White, Emerick, Mitch Hilligoss, Pat Tumilty, Travis Sweet, and Jake Owens all had two hits for the Gems, and White drove in three runs. For the Dragons Brian Shust, Joe Dunigan, and Ruairi O'Connor each had two hits.

Sunday's Results
Sunday afternoon action saw 4 very close ballgames, all decided by one run, in contrast to the four blowouts of Saturday night.

In Quincy, the hometown Gems defeated the Danville Dans 4-3 to knock the Dans out of sole possession of first place into a tie with Dubois County, who won their game today over DuPage County (see below).

Danville scored 2 in the top of the 1st inning on a homer by Justin Snyder and a sacrifice fly by Mitch Moreland, driving in Garrett Gipe who had doubled earlier in the inning. Quincy responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Pat Tumilty. In the top of the 2nd inning, the Dans’ Snyder belted his second homer of the game to give the Dans a 3-1 lead. However, Quincy scored an unearned run in the 5th and 2 more in the 6th on a solo homer by Travis Sweet and a squeeze bunt single by Nathan Emrick to take the lead for good.

Robby Young entered the game with 2 on and no outs in the top of the 6th and kept Danville from scoring and earned the victory when the Gems took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Jeff Niemiec earned his first save of the year pitching out of a jam in the 9th.

For the Dans, Snyder had the 2 homers and 2 RBI, Gipe had 2 hits and JoJo Tann also had 2 hits. Emrick had 2 hits for the Gems as did T.J. Kistner.

In Huntingburg, the hometown Dubois County Bombers moved back into a first place tie with Danville with an exciting 1-0 victory over the DuPage County Dragons by pushing across the game’s only run on an RBI single by Bruce Sprowl. Sprowl drove in Chris Schmidt who had led off the inning with a hit, stole second and advance to third on a pitch that got away.

Bombers pitchers Kyle Jones, Brady Decker and Aaron Clark held the Dragons scoreless, Clark picking up the win to even his record at 1-1.

DuPage’s Ruairi O'Connor had 2 of his team’s hits and Dubois’ Schmidt had 3 of his team’s 8 hits.

In Normal at Illinois State this afternoon, the Twin City Stars kept their home field “mojo” working as they remained undefeated on home turf with a 3-2 victory over the Springfield Stars.

Twin City got on the scoreboard first when Brian Dinkelman opened up the home half of the first with a single. A batter later Chris Bacigalupi doubled, scoring Dinkelman. Twin City scored again in the third when Blake Nelson singled, followed by a single off the bat of Bacigalupi. Ross McCoy then delivered a clutch 2-out single, scoring Nelson.

In the 4th inning, Twin City added an insurance run which proved to be a gamesaver. Nelson singled to center, scoring Shan Sullivan who had earlier got on base being hit by a pitch. Nick Achberger who had walked was thrown out at the plate on a great throw by the Springfield centerfield, Blake Helm.

Springfield made it a ballgame in the top of the 7th when Helm doubled, followed by a Ryan Hypke single, advancing Helm to third. Hypke the stole second setting up Springfield with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Blaine Cravens then drove a Chris Wright fastball to center, scoring Hypke and Helm.

The Twin City relief corps kept the Rifles at bay the rest of the way, with Adam Tobler holding the Rifles scoreless in the 8th and Craig Reynolds wrapping things up for the Stars with his 2nd save. Gary Cahoon notched his 2nd victory going 6 scoreless innings, while striking out 6.

Bacigalupi finished with 3-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI; Nelson had 2 hits. For Springfield, Hypke had 2 hits and Cravens had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

In the last game of the afternoon, it took 11 innings for the East Peoria Scrappers to prevail over the visiting Galesburg Pioneers by a final score of 9-8. It was the second extra inning game of the series between the Scrappers and Pioneers. The game-winning hit was an RBI single by Craig Rohren to score C.J. Webb with one out in the bottom of the 11th.

Aaron Hines (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win for East Peoria. Mike Massa and Cory Kral both had three hits for the Scrappers, while Jeff Darnall drove in 4 runs and Massa added three RBI's. Massa's home run leading off the bottom of the eight tied the game at 8. Ross Kelling also homered for the Scrappers, and Steven Scott had three hits for the Pioneers. The two teams combined for 25 hits, 13 by the Scrappers and 12 by the Pioneers.

Galesburg was helped by two outstanding defensive plays to stop Scrapper threats in the bottom of the 9th and 10th innings. The Scrappers had a runner at first and one out in the ninth when Cory Kral hit a sharp line drive towards the middle that appeared to be headed to center field. However, Pioneer pitcher David Fields snared the line drive and threw to first to double off the Scrappers' baserunner.

A similar play occurred in the 10th. With a runner at second and one away, Darnall hit a liner towards right. First baseman Kevin Diete made a leaping catch and then threw to second to double up the runner and end the inning.

Danville took over the league lead by one game over DuPage and Dubois at 9-2 with an 11-6 win over the Quincy Gems at Danville Stadium. The game was held up 71 minutes due to a lightning storm. In Huntingburg, Indiana, the Dupage Dragons rebounded from a 14-3 loss on Friday night to down the Dubois County Bombers 10-1 Saturday and even the three-game series at one game apiece. The Dragons scored nine runs over the final four innings to earn the decision.

A pitchers duel was blown open late when the Dragons plated two runs in the seventh and eighth, and four runs in the ninth off of Bomber relievers. Defensive miscues by the Bombers in the sixth and seventh allowed the Dragons to open up a 4-1 lead before the bats exploded late.

With one out in the eighth Brian Shust tripled to deep center, his CICL leading third of the year, and Omar Arif followed with an RBI single. Josh Wilson then drilled his first extra base hit of the year, earning his first RBI by plating Arif to take a 6-1 lead.

In the ninth, the Dragons opened the inning with Albert Carrizales tripling to center. With one out Victor Ferrante was intentionally walked, and Joe Dunigan reached on an error to score Carrizales. Shust followed with a single to score Ferrante, and Arif also delivered an RBI single. Wilson then drove in his second run by lifting a sacrifice fly to left and the damage was done with the Dragons up 10-1.

Adam Summers (1-0) earned the win in his second start on the hill, working eight innings while scattering seven hits, one run, and striking out two. His lone blemish was a homer by Ryan Basham on his second pitch of the game after Cory Bunner was retired on the first pitch. Derek Schlecker worked a scoreless ninth to finish out the game.

Arif, Wilson, Carrizales, and Shust each had two hits for the Dragons who slugged out 11 as a team, equaling their season high. The Dragons (8-3) also had a season high four extra-base hits and are now tied with the Bombers in the standings.

Early Fireworks
In the first of a three-game tilt with first place on the line, the Dubois County Bombers hammered out a 14-3 win over the Dupage Dragons in CICL play Friday night in Indiana. The game featured two Dubois ejections and a bench clearing incident in the sixth inning.

What looked like would be a pitcher’s duel was quite the opposite as two of the top pitchers in the CICL took the mound in the Dragons’ Miles Morgan and the Bomber’s Javier Martinez.

The Dragons jumped on a shaky Martinez in the first inning, scoring twice before their ace took the hill. Eaton Rincon led off with a walk and Albert Carrizales followed with a single. Ruairi O'Connor moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Joe Dunigan drove in one run after an error and Brian Shust drove in the other with a ground out.

The Bombers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of some well placed squibs to start the inning with four straight hits and end Miles Morgan’s 16 inning scoreless streak. The Dragons scored again the second off Martinez, taking a 3-2 lead when Drew Roberts scored on a passed ball.

The Bombers rallied to plate two more runs in the bottom of the second and take a 4-3 lead that wouldn’t be relinquished. Morgan (2-1) was chased from the game in the fourth after the Bombers put a five spot on the board. Morgan allowed 10 hits and nine runs in the outing while walking his first four batter of the season and striking out just one. The Bombers scored runs in every inning until Derek Schlecker held them scoreless in the seventh when the score was 14-3.

Tensions began to build in the fourth as Morgan hit Dubois catcher Nick Smith with an 0-1 pitch. Smith had words with Morgan and then confronted O’Connor, the Dragons catcher when he scored a run later in the inning. Both teams were warned after Dragon reliever Erik Paulson hit Mike Murray with a fastball that slipped away later in the inning.

With O’Connor at the plate in the sixth, Bombers starter Javier Martinez sailed a fastball no where near the plate over O‘Connor’s head and then came back and hit him in the back. Homeplate umpire Mike Rust immediately ejected Martinez (2-0) and the benches emptied as both teams traded heated words before order was restored. Another Bomber was ejected in the seventh inning as Aaron Clark, who relieved Martinez, hit Eddie Smith in the back with a pitch.

The Dragons managed just five hits as a team. Victor Ferrante had two of them and just missed a homer in the ninth. Ferrante also pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his third appearance of the season.

The Bombers victory allowed them to keep pace with Danville, both leading the league with 8-2 records.

In Danville tonight, the Dans stayed tied for the league lead with an 8-1 victory over the visintg Quincy Gems. Dusty Napoleon led the way with 4 RBI on 2 hits, and Danny Worth added 3 hits to the 11 hit Danville attack. Seb Salinas added a solo homer.

Dan Sattler (2-0) pitched 5 innings for the win and he and three other Dans pitchers held the Gems to just 5 hits while striking out 11.

At Horenberger Field on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University tonight, Twin City kept its home record perfect and reached the .500 mark at 5-5 tonight, overcoming a stellar performance by Springfield hurler, Adam Tallman. Tallman pitched 7 innings, struck out 9 Stars batters and allowed only 1 earned run. His counterpart for Twin City, Asif Shah was able to pitch out of trouble most of the night as Springfield left 11 runners on the basepaths. Shah allowed 6 hits during 6 innings of work. In the Springfield 3rd and 4th Shah pitched himself out of two bases loaded jams. For the night he struck out five. Unlike Tallman however, Shah received some clutch hits by Gary Walz and Nick Sandy who drove in the only runs the Stars would need. Brian Dinkelman added to his hit totals with a 3 for 3 performance and a triple. Springfield's Eric Lambert had 2 hits with a double and Dock Doyle also had a double for Springfield.

In East Peoria, the Galesburg Pioneers pulled out a tight one in ten innings over the Scrappers.

Galesburg scored first on a 2-run homer to left by Kevin Diete in the top of the fourth. The home run was the only blemish for East Peoria starter Dallas Sims through seven innings.

The Scrappers manufactured a run in the sixth. The inning started with a leadoff double by Ross Kelling and a walk to Craig Rohren. After a Cory Kral sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Bill Musselman drove in the run with a sacrifice fly. The second Scrapper run scored an inning later on an infield single by C.J. Webb.

The Pioneers pushed the go ahead run across with two outs in the 10th. With
nobody on, a walk to Ryan Bennett, and back to back singles by Steven Scott and Kevin Diete, with Diete's hit driving in the go ahead run. Dale Reneau pitched the final 4 innings for the Pioneers, allowing only 1 hit and picking up the win.

Thursday's Results
In Thursday action, all three first-place teams won their games tonight and remained tied for the league lead with 7-2 records.

The best game of the evening was in Danville, where the host Dans maintained their share of 1st place with a 4-3 win over the Galesburg Pioneers in a great 11 inning game in front of 2,100 fans. It was a tough loss for the Pioneers who were looking for their second victory of the season after they had scored 2 in the 9th to send the game into extra innings, leaving 2 men on in that 9th. Galesburg outhit the Dans 10-6 and Pioneer pitchers allowed only 1 earned run in the game.

Danville pushed across the winning run in the 11th on hits by Dusty Napoleon and Jake Tranchant and a Pioneer error. Napoleon was the only Dan to have 2 hits. The winning pitcher was David Pherrin (1-0), the 5th pitcher of the game for Danville.

For the Pioneers, an RBI single by Steven Scott in the 9th tied the game, his second hit of the evening. Zach Stead and Kevin Diete also had 2 hits in a losing cause.

In Huntingburg, Indiana, the host Dubois County Bombers defeated the Springfield Rifles 8-0 to stretch their record to 7-2. A 1-0 game got out-of-hand when Dubois scored 5 in the 5th inning, the big hit a 2-run single by Mike Murray. Chris Schmidt, Cory Bunner, Ryan Basham and Seth Hall each collected 2 hits in the game for the Bombers, while Ryan Hypke and Blaine Cravens had 2 hits for the Rifles.

Starting pitcher Corey Lewis (1-0) pitched 5 innings for the victory.

In East Peoria tonight, DuPage County was all over the East Peoria Scrappers 11-0 to also run their record to 7-2. The game was close at 2-0 until the 5th inning when the Dragons plated 6 runners to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The big hit of the inning was a bases-loaded triple by Brian Shust, one of his 3 hits on the night. Victor Ferrante had 2 hits and 3 RBI and Omar Arif had 3 hits and 2 RBI. Shust, Ferrante and Arif had 8 of the 11 total hits by the Dragons. Starter Barrett Brown pitched 7 innings and allowed just 2 hits to even his record at 1-1.

Gilbert Marlowe had 2 hits for the Scrappers, who had only 4 hits total.

The Twin City Stars stayed unbeaten at home tonight as they beat the Quincy Gems 11-7. Twin City scored early and often as they plated all 11 runs in the first 4 innings, and held on for the victory as the Gems rallied to make things interesting in the 9th. All of the Twin City position players hit safely with Asif Shah leading the offense with 3 hits and a double, driving in 3 runs. Chris Turner (2 RBIs), Doug Eldridge (1 RBI) and Julian Brown (2 RBIs) each had a double. Dan Frega notched his 2nd win, going 6 innings, while striking out 8 Gems.

The Gems, who trailed at one time trailed by 9 runs, crawled back into the game, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd on the first homer of the season by Travis Sweet. With the score 11 to 3 going into the ninth, this one looked like a done deal for Twin City, but the Gems had other ideas. Travis Sweet led off the inning with a triple to right center field. Ben Geelan connected for a pinch-hit single, driving in Sweet in the process. T.J. Kistner reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Geelan at second. The next Gems batter, Jason White doubled down the left field line scoring Kistner. White advanced to third on a Twin City throwing error. Nathan Emrick kept the rally alive as he drove in White with a single. Mitch Hilligoss, who had tripled earlier in the game connected for his second hit sending Emrick to second. Dan Pietroburgo doubled, scoring Emrick, and Pat Tumilty worked new pitcher Craig Reynolds for a walk. With the bases loaded, Travis Sweet represented the tying run. Sweet who had homered, doubled and tripled needed just a single to hit for the cycle. But Reynolds got him to ground out preserving the victory for the Stars and earning a save for his efforts.

In East Peoria, it was a good pitching duel at 1-1 when a couple of hits mixed in with a couple of walks, a hit batsman, and a wild pitch led to 4 runs to enable the DuPage Dragons to take a 5-1 lead they would never relinquish. Albert Carrizales had a 2 run single in the inning and Isaac Rincon a bases-loaded walk.

The Scrappers scored 1 in the second on a two out, RBI double by Shane Elenz. They added two in the eighth on a two run home run by Ross Kelling.

The game got exciting in the ninth. With the Dragons leading 5-3, a single by Elenz and a double off the left field wall by catcher Bill Musselman put the tying run in scoring position with one away. The Dragons then brought in Victor Ferrante, who slammed the door and picked up the save by striking out the next two batters.

Joe Dunigan and Brian Shust had 2 hits for the Dragons, Elenz 2 hits for the Scrappers. Carrizales of the Dragons and Kelling of the Scrappers each had 2 RBI.

The winning pitcher was Adam Vetter (1-0) with Ferrante picking up his first save.

In Galesburg, the Danville Dans again pounded Pioneer pitching with 19 hits in a 10-1 victory. Seven Dans had multi-hit games with Nick Hardy leading the way with 4 hits. JoJo Tann and David Huffman had 3 hits each; and Dusty Napoleon, Chad Crosswhite, Jeff Flagg and Seb Salinas had 2 hits apiece. Flagg and Salinas each had 2 RBI.

Starting and winning pitcher Matt Couch evened his record at 1-1 by tossing 6 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only 2 of the 4 hits Galesburg managed for the evening.

In Quincy, the Gems defeated the Twin City Stars 7-2 on a solid pitching performance by Gems pitcher Seth Minter, who evened his record at 1-1. Seth only gave up three hit in his seven innings on the hill.

The Gems took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on a 2 RBI double by Mitch Hilligoss. Hilligoss and Anthony Albano both had two doubles in the game. Albano had 3 hits and 3 RBI, Hilligoss 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Pat Tumilty had 2 hits.

The Stars' runs were both driven in by Shan Sullivan, on a home run and RBI single. Stars' Center fielder Ross McCoy nearly had an in-the-park home run in the top of the ninth when he hit a deep fly ball off the edge of the left field wall that ricocheted back into center field. He settled for a triple and scored on the Sullivan hit.

Tuesday's Results
Five games were on schedule for the start of the second week of the season Tuesday evening.

In Springfield, the Dubois County Bombers swept both ends of a double-header from the Springfield Rifles to advance their record to 6-2 and into first place with a half game lead over the three teams who have 5-2 records.

In game 1, the Bombers had baserunners in every inning and scored single runs in 5 of the 7 innings to win 5-2. Three of the runs were unearned as the Rifles committed 3 errors in the game. Cory Bunner had 2 hits as did Nick Smith. Ryan Basham, Cody Gilbert, Bruce Sprowl and Kasey Wahl each had an RBI. The Rifles' Dock Doyle extended his hitting streak to 7 games in a losing cause. Ryan Hypke knocked in both of the Rifles' runs on a base hit and ground out.

Starting pitcher Kyle Jones earned the victory to move to 2-0 and Aaron Clark picked up his second save of the season.

In game 2, the Bombers once again had baserunners in almost every inning, and rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 7th to squeak out a 4-3 win. The big blow was a 2-out, bases loaded, bases clearing double by shortstop Mike Murray. Brady Decker earned the win in relief for the Bombers.

In Lisle, The East Peoria Scrappers scored eight runs in the final three innings to defeat the Dupage Dragons 8-6. The deciding moment occured with the bases loaded and one out, C.J. Webb lifted a fly ball to shallow left, and when the infield fly rule was called the ball dropped in allowing the tying run to score. Craig Rohren singled home the two go ahead runs. The win erased a 6-0 deficit that the Dragons built by scoring six runs in the fourth inning.

Jeff Darnall had 3 hits for the Scrappers, and Ryan Curry and Mike Massa each had 2 hits. Darnall, Webb, Curry and Rohren each had 2 RBI. Christopher Dougherty earned the win in relief for the Scrappers, and Aaron Hines picked up his first save.

For the Dragons, Isaac Rincon had 2 hits and Ruairi O'Connor had 3 hits.

In Galesburg, Danville pounded out 18 hits off of 3 Galesburg pitchers to take an easy 15-0 win over the Pioneers. The Dans scored in 8 of the 9 innings and left another 10 runners on base. Leading the charge was second baseman Chuck Sindlinger with 4 hits. Justin Snyder, Jake Tranchant, Mitch Moreland, and Jeff Flagg each had 2 hits. Snyder and Morelan each had 2 RBI, while Tranchant and Danny Worth each had 3 RBI. The 15 runs were scored without aid of a home run. Three Danville pitchers held the Pioneers to a total of 4 hits, with starter Wes Roemer earning the victory, striking out 8 in 6 innings of work.

In Normal, bus problems for the traveling Quincy Gems delayed the start of tonight's game against the Twin City Stars by 40 minutes. Making a case for warming up being over-rated, the Gems quickly got on the board in the first inning by taking a 1-0 lead on a double by Billy McKinney and a throwing error later in the inning.

Quincy was able to keep the lead until the 4th, when the Stars' Chris Bacigalupi opened the frame with a single. One out later, Gary Walz doubled over the head of the centerfielder, easily scoring Bacigalupi. A batter later Asif Shah came through in the clutch with a 2 out single which gave the Stars their first lead of the game.

In the Quincy 5th, Mitch Hilligoss and Jay Molina both got plunked by pitches. Pat Tumilty then singled home Hilligoss. Twin City answered in their half, Chris Turner led off with a single. Brian Dinkelman sacrificed Turner to second, then was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Kyle O'Brien grounded out, scoring Turner and gave the Stars the lead for good. Twin City added insurance runs in the 7th and 8th and came away with a 5-2 victory. Chris Bacigalupi connected for a double and a single, and Chris Turner also had 2 hits for the Stars. Billy McKinney had 2 of the 6 Quincy hits.

With Quincy stranding 11 on the basepaths, Gary Cahoon (1-0) was able to pitch out of trouble all night and picked up the win. Dan Frega came on in the 9th to garner his first save of the season.

Victor Ferrante walked to load the bases, and Drew Roberts drew a bases loaded walk to score the game’s second run. Shust was the only player in the game to have 2 hits.

Pherrin earned his first save of the year, preserving the win for starter Brandon Farmer.

The Scrappers committed 5 errors and allowed Danville to score two of their five runs with two outs. Scrappers’ Shane Elenz went 1-3 with a homer to extend his hitting streak to 6 games to start the season. Danny Worth homered to lead off the Dans second inning, and Chuck Sindlinger and Dusty Napoleon each had two RBI for Danville. Saturday Afternoon
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon on a bustling Illinois State campus (the Special Olympics were also going on), the Twin City Stars handed the DuPage County Dragons its first loss of the season. Dragons starter Barrett Brown pitched a gem, striking out 9 Twin City batters, but he lacked offensive support. Brown threw 7.2 innings and gave up 7 hits. He was touched for an "ugly" run in the third when Nick Achberger struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch which caromed off home plate umpire Tom Lamonica. Lamonica was momentarily dazed and lay motionless on the ground while Achberger reached second on a throwing error. After a brief delay to allow Lamonica to get his wits about him, he was able to return to his duties behind home plate. Chris Turner then sacrificed Achberger to third. The Stars next batter Brian Dinkelman singled, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead.

Twin City starter Asif Shah pitched well too, allowing only 1 unearned run which came in the 5th inning. With 2 out, Brian Shust walked, followed by another 2 out walk to Isaac Rincon. Albert Carrizales then reached on a throwing error which allowed Shust to score the tying run.
The score stayed at 1-1 until 1 out in the Stars half of the 8th inning. Chris Bacigalupi lined a 2-0 breaking ball down the left field line for a double. A batter later, Shan Sullivan singled in what would be the winning run.

Dinkelman and Ross McCoy each had 2 hits for the Stars and Craig Reynolds who relieved Shah in the 7th, pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing only 1 hit while striking out 2 and got the win.

Friday's Results
Dubois County Bombers Ryan Basham bashed two bombs with the bases bloated Friday night to lead the Bombers to an 11-10 slugfest win at QU Stadium over the host Quincy Gems. Two grand slams in one game by the same player have apparently never happened in the 42 year history of the league as there is no mention of it in the Record Book - until now! Basham's 8 RBI did not tie or set a new record as the record is 9 set back in 1989.

Basham had 3 hits overall and teammate Kyle Smith had 2 hits and an RBI. Dusty Baker managed to hold on for the save getting the final out and leaving the bases loaded with only 1 run scored in the inning. Cody Litteken was credited with the win for the Bombers. Quincy's Jay Molina had two doubles with 4 RBI and Pat Tumilty added a 2-run homer after Molina's second double.

In East Peoria, the home team Scrappers extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Danville Dans. Three Scrappers combined on a 2 hitter. Dallas Sims (1-0) pitched 7 strong innings, giving up only 2 hits and one run while striking out 7 and walking 2. Aaron Saving and Craig Rohren finished up without allowing a hit.

The Scrappers scored 3 in the decisive bottom of the 5th thanks to an RBI double from C.J. Webb and a clutch 2-out, 2-run triple from Ryan Curry into the right field corner.

DuPage County remained unbeaten defeating visiting Twin City 7-5. Twin City's Sean McElyea took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the home opener for the Dragons, but the home team Dragons scored five times to erase a 4-0 deficit and take a 5-4 lead. The Dragons had three extra base hits with the big blow coming on a Victor Ferrante double to right on a ball that hung in the air and scored two runs to tie the game. Ruairi O'Connor followed with his first hit as a Dragon, scoring Ferrante to give the Dragons the lead. O'Connor had another hit to become the only Dragon to collect more than 1 hit.

Reliever Kyle Smith earned the win, working 2.1 hitless innings. Dragons' reliever Derek Schlecker saved his fourth consecutive game, striking out two in the ninth.

Chris Bacigalupi went 2-4 at the plate with a homer and 2 RBI for the Stars who connected on 10 hits. Gary Walz also had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Brian Dinkelman, Ross McCoy and Shan Sullivan also had 2 hits apiece.

In Galesburg tonight, the Springfield Rifles defeated host Galesburg Pioneers in a 3 hour marathon 13-6. Rifles shortstop Tyler Malone led the attack with 6 RBI on 3 base hits and a groundout. Designated hitter Ryan Kendrick had 4 hits and 3 RBI; Joey Albsmeyer had 3 hits and 2RBI and Travis Scott had 2 hits. Starter Cody Flynn pitched 6 scoreless innings allowing only 2 hits while striking out 11 of the 24 batters he faced.

The Pioneers trailed 13-0 after the top of the 8th, but made a game of it by scoring 3 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th off of Rifles relief pitching. Nine different Pioneers players each had a hit and Kevin Diete parlayed his hit and a sacrifice fly into 3 RBI.

The 2005 season will again feature a midseason All-Star game scheduled for Wednesday evening, July 13, in Lisle (DuPage County’s home field).

Four of the eight teams in the league will feature first-year field managers: Jamie Sailors at Danville, Bobby Cerard at DuPage County, Brian Unger at Galesburg, and Nate Metzger at East Peoria.
