Note on Statistics, Wednesday Results
From this point forward, minimum criteria will be used to rank the various offensive, defensive and pitching statisitics on the website. For hitters, the minimum is 2.5 plate appearances multiplied times the number of games played by the team who has played the fewest games. For pitchers, the minimum is 1 inning pitched multiplied times the number of games played by the team who has played the fewest games. Minimum quantities are found at the bottom of each report.

For example, if 4 teams have played 17 games and the other 2 teams have played 15 games, the minimum plate appearances required to be in the leader categories is 15 x 2.5 = 37.5 (rounded to 38). Using the same number of games as above, the pitching minimum would be 15 innings. Tonight's published statistics reflect these minimums.

As a result, Quincy Gems' Michael Cole is credited with a no-hitter, the first such game in 5 years. Cole pitched 6 innings, fanned 7 and walked only 1 batter. He faced the minimum number of batters of 18 as the only baserunner the Rifles had was erased caught stealing. In other action, the Springfield at Quincy game was halted by rain with Quincy leading 4-0 after 6 innings. Under that rule, the game is suspended and completed the next time the teams play at the same site, with the completion of the suspended game and the regularly scheduled game both shortened to 7 innings. As soon as the official ruling is known it will be published here and stats and standings will be updated when it becomes official.

The third game of the evening saw the Bluff City at Galesburg game postponed by rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on June 16 (Wednesday), beginning at 5:00 PM.

CICL OPENS 42nd SEASON OF BASEBALL ON JUNE 10
Springfield, Ill – The 42nd edition of the Central Illinois Collegiate League opens its season on June 10 under third-year commissioner Ron Riggle, Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois.

The 2004 season features the return of a team for the city of Galesburg, Illinois, replacing the Decatur Blues who folded after 18 seasons in the league. Galesburg, who are nicknamed the Pioneers, return to the league after a 22 year absence, having been one of the charter CICL members starting in 1963 and playing in the league’s first 20 years (1963-1982). The Pioneers will play their home games at Jim Sundberg Field, named after the former major leaguer and CICL alumnus.

The 2004 season opens with two games on June 10, Quincy at Galesburg and Twin City at Bluff City. The Danville Dans and Springfield Rifles open their season the next night with a game at Springfield. The Rifles will play their home games at Lanphier Park this season. A complete schedule for 2004 is enclosed. The 2004 season will once again take top college and professional prospects through an aggressive 44 game schedule and a four-team elimination tournament at the end of the season.

Breaking a practice started in 1998, the league will not play divisions this year. All teams will compete in one division with the top 4 teams playing in the postseason tournament, a best two-out-of-three semi-final series August 6-8, and the final two teams squaring off in a three game series for the Tournament Championship August 10-12.

The 2004 season will again feature a midseason All-Star game scheduled for Tuesday evening, July 6, in Alton (Bluff City).

Four of the six teams in the league will feature first-year field managers. Bluff City will be guided by Chris Erwin; Jami Isaacson will manage the Galesburg Pioneers; Eric Weaver will lead the Springfield Rifles; and Jake Perganson will manage the Twin City Stars. At Quincy, Luke Sabers will direct the Quincy Gems for the second season and at Danville, Bill Ferrari returns for his 3rd season at the helm. Danville won the Eastern Division, and the CICL Tournament title in 2003.

Since 1963, more than 850 CICL alumni have moved on to professional baseball, with more than 150 reaching the Major Leagues.
